The Swedish band The Search wraps catchy pop melodies into a gloomy cloak, creating escaping the daily grey routines. When the press is talking about The Search, they speak of a beautiful retro-mix of wave and rock in the vein of The Cure and Joy Division. The band does not deny their roots, but take pleasure in paraphrasing them in their own slightly deranged and atmospheric way.

In order to achieve a wider musical range on their 4th album ‘Saturnine Songs’ they hooked up two diferent producers. Kristofer Jönson from the band Jeniferever was hired to conjure up the melancholic, darker part of the album with songs like ‘Yes-Man’ and ‘Swimmer’ and Elof Loelv, producer and musician, was engaged to invoke the electronical parts in songs like ‘Distant’ and ‘Other People’, where he created a catchy, yet dreamy sound. The album is mastered at Studio Tonteknik by Magnus Lindberg, a well-known mastering engineer.

The first single ‘Distant’ is a good preview of the upcoming CD-release on April 25, 2008 (in Germany on May 16, 2008). Two more tracks from ‘Saturnine Songs’, ‘Other People’ and ‘Swimmer’, are already available on Myspace.

“Butterfly and Eskimo” is one of the most frequented tracks from our compilation “Spätsommerkollektion”. Many other artists were inspired by these sounds and produced their own versions. We proudly present a selection of remixes and also the properly video of the original track made by nootoon.
Plus1 from Saxonia starts with a dubby oldschool-version and Volker Selzner continues a little bit faster. Gunne shows us his “Lebensfreude” with a downbeat-piano, while the “Schallschnelle” Jamy Wing from Jena changes into minimal-percussive. Legoego, aka Phonout & Dataman unpack their disco balls and Cie from Cologne makes a pop-technotrack. As next we listen to industrial and experimental Elektro of Pork4, and also a break-version of Peedge. Kassel based Norman produced 2 progressive remixes and Freund der Familie culminate in a Dubstep-version. Have fun!

Christian Szer swims towards minimal glitchy sounds fusionated with experimental sound sequences, he also adds a dark integrated background, turning the track into a fusionated piece. Sven Laux examined it sound by sound, and constructed a nostalgic deep dubby techno trip with a touch of glitch, sure. Afterwards, we´ll remain an openminded position, cause Wub Wub brings out a special exploding remix only for d & b and dubstep fans!!. Foam show us how to get deep into a bassline and forget about the world combined with really dark ambiance and a neural trippy feeling. And For the last track Medu brings the dancefloor to your feet, a monster bassline guides the track that’s gonna make you move your hips and head around flowing around witch glitches and snares.

“Dynamics of Darkness” is the second full-length release by Brokenkites.

From Origami Shadows:

“Did you know that something on the order of every seven years the average human replaces ninety eight percent of their molecules with new molecules? That’s like every handful of years, you’re ninety eight percent different than you were before, yet you hardly notice a real change at all. I guess you kind of realize that you’re growing older, and your relationships change, but you feel like you’re the same person, for the most part.”

“Really? Ninety eight percent?” I asked, wondering if she was right.

“Look it up!” she replied. “Anyway, that’s not the point I’m making, it’s just an idea, an example. The point I am trying to make to you is that you never notice a change, but a change has been made, gradually. And maybe that’s what happens when you die, you just sort of make a smooth transition to the next level, a level that’s probably only about one or two percent of the way things are as we know it.”

“That’s a good point, but I think you’re reaching for something that isn’t really there.”

“Maybe, but it makes sense to me.” She crossed her arms on top of the covers. “I mean, you don’t have to have god for that, do you?”

“S is for Shadows” is the first release by Brokenkites.

From Origami Shadows:

“There are people out there that will tell you that the memories are all just random chemical coding stored in the nerves inside of your brain, and that false memories can be fabricated just as easily as real ones, as long as you know what you’re doing. I’ve asked them,” she said.

“Scary thought,” I responded, considering that the people she’d asked might be the kind of people that would do something like that, given the right equipment and a willing subject. Once upon a time, I chose to believe that there was something out there beyond what was easily explainable. Today, that something meant that a strange girl had become a part of my life and her story was a little beyond what seemed to be true… and I caught myself overanalyzing it all, something I tended to do that had broken apart trust in relationships before her, something I had learned to do as an unwilling defensive mechanism as a result of the divorce. But I trusted her, for whatever reason, and in doing so; it meant that I accepted her mysterious past as part of the deal.

“I’ve asked a man to try to help me recall things, you know,” she said, standing up off the swing. I stayed put, not winding the chains up anymore.

“Did it work?” I asked, assuming that they’d followed through. “He wouldn’t do it. He said he might be able to, if we broke into a hospital or a medical lab somewhere, but he feels that if we made the effort that there is too large a margin of error and that it could potentially do more harm than good, permanently erasing parts of more than just my memory, going into my personality and identity itself.”

“A risk you shouldn’t take,” I finished for her.

“A risk that he’s not willing to take, at least not yet. We’ve only been talking for a few weeks, so he’s giving me more time to recover the memories on my own”.

The music of Hollydrift integrates technology, the human voice, calculated soft electronics, found sound, and rhythm. In the four tracks of the Halting Gait EP, Hollydrift maintains this signature sound while making impressionistic ambient textures constructed into overt unapologetic emotional gothic tableaux framed by steady rhythms. Choral voices resemble medieval motets while recalling shimmering sheets of sound ala shoegaze. Through it all, unintelligible singing voice samples weave in and out of focus communicating the melancholy and chaos against a background of looping introspection. This EP marks a new period in the band’s artistic development. Gone now are the noise collages and in their place, an expansive sonic landscape from a land of clouds and snow.

Hollydrift is Mathyas Erin Anderson, an audio artist who lives and works in Ozaukee County Wisconsin. For many years Mathyas created noise/sound collage but has permanently abandoned that genre for a smeary shoegaze form of darkwave using synthesizers, drum machines, found sounds, and human voice. Mathyas is not a musician as much as a music sculptor; bringing musical elements together that don’t always match or fit a popular sonic model of proper music.

Old Is Gold returns with Golden Vibes 3, the latest in their series of “homemade” new school Goa trance compilations from The Wonderboy. Designed to rekindle the true spirit of mid-nineties Goa trance, this release features a mix of veteran producers and newcomers including K.O.B. (Filteria), Subra (Felis), AFGIN, Jikooha, and Har-El Prussky, all of whom should be known to fans of the style. Since this release features no mastering or post-production, sound quality varies from track to track. Unlike previous releases in the Golden Vibes series, this one is available in WAV format in addition to the usual MP3 package. If you enjoy the cosmic melodies and authentic spirit of Goa trance this is not a compilation to miss!

“Pneuma” is the eighteen deepindub release made from the mind of Alexandre Lehmann in art Zzzzra.

With this ep he provides four firm dub techno tunes, that are tight burners that will cause people moving and dreaming on the floor. Tunes with grudging beats and flashing delay stabs, underlining dubby cut-off pads, and expecially Sumo track rich of longing faraway dubs.

I hope you enjoy this ep and look as forward to Zzzzra’s new material as I do too.
