Enjoy

Completing Enjoyed took a number of hands and plenty of elbow grease. We are deeply thankful to Björk for taking time out of her tour to answer our questions and offering commentary. Þakka þér kærlega, Björk! We’d also like to thank to Scott Hansen for his gorgeous album art, Phillip Klum for the absolutely amazing job mastering the project, the video team of Jon McMillan/Matt Neatock/Raphael Rodriguez/Shea Hess for shooting the band interviews, everyone at Sacks & Co., and Haukur S. Magnússon for help with our Icelandic. Finally, a major major thank you to all the bands for their participation — folks juggled hectic tour and personal schedules and managed to get us amazing interpretations of Björk’s originals. All is much appreciated.

As you may have noticed, this is our first compilation without Roman Numerals in the the title: We took the name from track “Enjoy.” Of course, we also get the possible plays on “Post.” We are bloggers, after all.

If you have a mission to fulfill, you might be well-advised to activate a network of supporters. In the case of Zengineers the mission is to revive a musical language written off by many with some new content.

A network, consisting of the netlabels iD.EOLOGY and musicartistry, is already there to back them up. And so their dichotomic approach to the question whether these days there still is anything left to say on the topic of drum’n'bass bestows upon us a netaudio-premiere in the shape of a double-album release divided upon two netlabels. “Hikari” and “Yamiyo” act complementary to one another in style and content and yet the two halves unite 24 tracks, on which Zengineers easily recombine genre characteristics of past and present days with stylistic tidbits from synthpop-vocals to world-music-vibes and jazz-elements.

“Yamiyo”, published on musicartistry, has both its feet on the solid ground of the present. Harsh resonance-filters meet driving boldbeats, the massive sound of ferro-concrete contrasts the clanging of shattering glass while Photek and Eat Static are dancing the funky chicken in front of our inner ear. Indications of jazzy basses coolly groove into the action and put us into smokey subterranean bars, just to hunt us down white-tiled subway stations in a feverish electro-staccato the very next moment.

When the ride is about to come to an end you notice how many different ways drum’n'bass still has these days to make you feel your own physicality, while at the same time you wonder whether the same thing is true for the inner cinema-qualities of the genre. More on that on “Hikari” (available on www.ideology.de).

Right place, right time: Alejandra Iglesias (aka Dinky) might just be the Zelig of electronic music. Born in Chile, she hung out with the likes of Ricardo Villalobos, Dandy Jack and others in the mid-’90s when she was first getting into dance music. Then, when she moved to New York on a dance scholarship, she got caught up with the Minus crew, just as Magda and Richie Hawtin were first hanging out in Gotham in the late æ90s. After visa issues in the wake of 9/11, Dinky made her way to Berlin, where she has taken her career to the next level via relentless touring, a successful record label (Horizontal), not to mention a breakout hit on Cocoon in 2005 (’Acid in My Fridge’).

Dinky was supposed to consolidate all of this with her debut mix CD, Get Lost 03, issued on Crosstown Rebels late last year, but after the distributor Amato went bust, so too did the fortunes of her CD, many of which sit languishing in a warehouse somewhere in England waiting for the legal red tape to be sorted. But Dinky is fighting back with an RA podcast, and a set which features many of the same artists as her Get Lost 03 mix, including Matt John, The Mountain People and Radio Slave. Elsewhere there are some classic selections from Arthur Russell and Dan Bell, along with a number of unreleased tracks from Sascha Dive, Tobi Neumann & Matthew Styles and Dinky herself. Oh. And a DJ Assault track. (We’ll let Dinky explain that one’)
