Bio

In 1994, inspired by the hardcore and jungle scene, John began writing breakbeat music and used the name Psychadelik Pedestrian for his first tracks in these style (often shortened to just PP). Until 1996, John wrote most of his music under this name. By this time, however, John was becoming more interested in producing hardcore and techno, and adopted the John D (later Prism) name in for this, using the PP name only for drum & bass / breakbeat tunes.

During 1996 and 1997, PP tracks became more experimental and started to feature sweeping pads, strings and heavily cut up breakbeats, often slowed down to half speed. This trademark sound was evident in tracks such as “Fly” (1996), “Slow It Down” (1996) and “Tranquil War” (1997). By the end of 1997, John’s other music projects meant that PP was pushed into the background, and only two new solo PP tracks were produced between 1998 and 2001 – “Eternal Truth” from 1998, and “Look To The Light” from 2000. During this time, PP collaborated with JVS and Dave Kent for some interesting cross-genre tracks.

On PP’s return in 2001, tracks began to have a slower, breakbeat / techno fusion feel, reflected in “Endless Time”. In 2002, PP topped the Toucan listener’s chart for the first time since 1998, with a remix of “Liquid Nitrogen” – a track first written back in 1994! John also began to experiment with chillout under the PP name in 2002, recording “Night Beach” and remixing Excelsior’s “Tranquillity Rising” and several other tracks in a downtempo style. “Night Beach”‘ became one of the year’s most popular tracks and John has been producing chilled PP remixes for other artists ever since. This move had a large impact on the rise in profile of the PP name during 2002.

During 2003 and 2004, PP tracks became even more diverse, examples being the drum and bass “Outer Self” also being simultaneously made into chillout track “Inner Self”, and the funky “Filter Groove”, a track which sampled itself. By this stage, John was combining his early sound of half speed breakbeats and sweeping, haunting pad samples with modern instrumental influences such as delayed piano, strings and electro beats.

John has recently spent some time remixing and remaking some of his older PP tracks, such as “Eternal Truth” (remixed in 2003 as a chillout track, and 2004 as a breakbeat track) and “Tranquil War” (remixed in 2005). “Another Boring Lunchtime” – a track originally written in 1996 and originally remixed in 1999, was again reworked in 2006, one of John’s biggest PP projects to date. In early 2005, new track “Memories” was the first PP track to feature a full, original vocal; this was produced using a vocoder. Since 2005, John has used a more synthesized, electro sound in tracks such as “Twist Turn Slide”, “Power Line” and “Hypnotise”, while in 2007 John returned to his more mellow, acoustic sound for “Departure Lounge”. The long overdue self-titled album from Psychadelik Pedestrian, featuring fourteen of the Pedestrian’s most well known tracks is due for release in Autumn 2008.
