Maya is the latest release by catalan artist Nigul (aka Jaume Muntsant). After one year of hard work and being busy with his other project Hermético, Muntsant releases his fifth album until the date.

Maya is a new twist on this dark ambient project. This time Muntsant releases a more aseptic album, cleaner and more minimalistic than its previous. It seems that conceptually Hermético and Nigul are getting closer in terms of economy of media and aesthetics. Despite this minimalistic issues, Maya also contains the list of themes that Muntasnt loves to bring up to the light, such us epic nostalgia, farewell encounters and misterious names of tracks.

Finally, with Maya, Nigul is walking a new path in which the guitar takes a new role on the construction of sonorities. As well there is always a special care on building a narrative flow of hidden ideas, lost stories and all sorts of secrets beneath all the layers of sound structures. And this is a reminder of the inspirational referents of this catalan artist, dark stories, secrets, epic, and finally David Lynch, somewhere watching us.

Welcome to Earth Mantra Netlabel’s one hundredth release. To celebrate this milestone, we decided early on that this album should be a compilation of the artists who made up the previous ninety-nine releases.

Little did we realize how many of our artists would want to contribute and how excellent the music would be. As a result, this release has grown to encompass four full discs of sublime ambience, with more than four hours of music end to end. We’re very proud of the result.

Special thanks to all of the artists for their contributions, both to this compilation, to Earth Mantra, as well as to the ambient community at large. Your generosity helps make the ambient world a better place, and Earth Mantra simply could not exist without you.

This piece of music is a slightly changed rework of a liveact
setup by Mr. Incognito. It was prepared for a final event of
a workshop, of learning to make art out of special cosmic
ingredients, who were explored to earth. The event took place
in Riesa in May 2009. The concert took place in front of 15
people, sitting on snugly wooden and cushioned seats in front
of a good sounding P.A.

[earman098] mindSpiral – Curiosa Positronica (2009)

In April of 2009, Mike Metlay launched the latest of his mindSpiral collaborative projects. This version, the eighth incarnation so far, was a trio composed of David Herpich (better known as Emerald Adrift), Darrell Burgan (better known as Palancar), and of course Mike himself.

The central purpose of this version of mindSpiral was to compose and rehearse music for a live performance taking place at the Fiske Planetarium in Boulder, Colorado, on April 11, 2009. However, when you put three experienced improvisational electronic musicians together in a room, all of whom are DJs on the StillStream.com net radio station, and all of whom are very much used to playing live on air, it is inevitable that at some point the rehearsal process would be set aside so they could just play together for fun and inspiration, with an online audience following the action.

So it was that on April 7 and 10, 2009, David, Mike, and Darrell played two hour-long live improvisations on StillStream.com, and on April 12, the morning after the successful planetarium show, they played a third hour on Second Life, before going their separate ways. The artists felt the music from all three of these sessions was remarkably inspired and focused, and upon relistening over the summer, they determined that there was enough material here for at least two releases, not to mention the recordings of the music for the planetarium show (whose ultimate fate is still some ways in the future).

The process was fairly straightfoward. The jam sessions were carefully listened to, and then chopped into smaller pieces where there were obvious break points. Selections from that list of tracks were then ordered into releasable sets with a common theme or feel. The first of those releases is this album, entitled “Curiosa Positronica”.

The idea for the title came from the divergent and often thought-provoking moods of the pieces collected for the release. Taken as a whole, these ten songs give the impression of a robot from some future (past?) time, poring over ancient manuscripts in a passionate attempt to understand how human beings think … or thought. By turns sad, arresting, and whimsical, this extraordinary collection of music belies the fact that it was all performed live with no rehearsals or preparation.

Earth Mantra is excited to be able to bring you this first glimpse into the colorful, mournful, amusing world of mind8Spiral.

[qd-4257] Switchboard Of Souls – Don’t Bother Me – Remixes (2009)

When Switchboard Of Souls sings: “Don’t bother me, just leave us alone, don’t you know that we’re all just as human,” he sounds the anthem of the alienated and the disenfranchised. It’s a simple enough tune, but the variations do bring new viewpoints to the plate.

The first two original 8-minute-plus tracks utilize a driving darkwave synth with guitars and vocals reminiscent of early New Order, but subsequent versions range from electro 808 State-like arrangements (Common Prayer Mix), to industrial stylings (BlenderMix), to sinister downtempo (Hands & Feet Mix), to 90s pop remix (InstrumentalMix), to new age piano (Sonata), to a combo of everything on the 2 reprises.

What can i say about this music? I doubt that thing that you’ll hear is possible to call a music in common meaning. This work is dedication to all people that died in world wars. Just wars or not, i won’t judge. Just war doesn’t exsist. This is always sorrow, grief, tears of mothers had never seen their sons again. Brides never weares their bridal veils, beloved stayed laying on fields of struggles. Wifes still feels husbands’ hugs in their dreams. We have to remember all of them who was with us – our children, husbands, beloved people. They are alive and with us when we think of them. Three of my childhood friends hadn’t come back from war in Afghanistan, fourth came crippled. I may say, this music (or something bigger than only music) inspired by communication and conversations about war with that man who was through the hell on earth.

My requiem for fallen. Minute of silence impressed on the sound.
Eternal memory for fallen soldiers!
God save you and your families from the horrors of war.
