November 12, 2009 · Leave a Comment

http://ia341315.us.archive.org/0/items/NS003/OCTOBER_TURNCOAT_thumb.jpg

mellow electronic / ambient / acoustic music

Rho is childhood friends Steve Setzepfandt and Josh Wittman. No-Source worked with Rho to curate the October Turncoat EP. October Turncoat sets out of show off Rho’s more acoustic side. Each track contains washes of guitar complimented with subtle ambient texture.

The EP often evokes the sounds of early Bibio or “The Campfire Headphase” era Boards of Canada.

Three songs, Simpl, JW2 and The Game of Flowers are all taken from Rho’s 2008 debut, “Breathing Through the Liquid System”. The songs, Long Drive Home and Lightning Strikes and LEDs are taken from Rho’s most recent album “Glass Memories”. The EP contains one previously unreleased track, And More Rain, a 5 minute journey of backwards guitars, subtle picking, drums and end of a season.

Viya, the live performance band which frequently takes to the stage in clubs across Taksim / İstanbul and a lot of festivals in Turkey. Viya means ‘body surfing’ in the Laz language. Formed in june 2008 with Zeynep Türkmen on Violin; Özgür Çakır on Guitar and Sound effects; Barış Demirel on Bass Guitars, melodicas, vocals; Aydın Türkoğlu on Drums .The group is best known for its keenness for improvisation and utilizations with folk, jazz, rock sounds. They just work on their job in a narrow music market about their genre. Their genre doesn’t solely comprise eastern culture. Also they use tunes from northern europe and usually use measures 9-8 and psychedelic components . Sometimes the band makes surprise with adding their brothers on different instruments for the live shows. Viya the band which moves with fellowship of Oppa Tzupa Zound Zystem. So they are proceeding with their brothers. Now, they are working on materials for their first album (planning for september 2010).

Emily In Love: Let’s Pretend We’re In Love

October 18, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Emily – producer, musician, all-round renaissance woman and the guiding light behind Emily In Love – presents her new release “Let’s Pretend We’re In Love”. Compared the her first EP on Corpid Extra, the sound is a lot more defined and confident now, a lot less electronic, as Emily spent a lot of time recording instruments live, occasionally bringing in other musicians like her partners Pia and Ricardo.

[sec.038] Nina-me – Life Of Steps (2009)

October 1, 2009 · 1 Comment

Music has always been an important source of inspiration for Nina. She started her singing career in her early twenties and has sung in a number of different bands. Nina is very interested in the arts with particular focus on music, painting and photography.
Nina was born in Stockholm but now resides in Malmö, Sweden.
All songs are written and performed by Nina with the exception of ‘After seven years love’ which was a joint venture together with the late Johan Pettersson and ‘Dying’ on which Johan plays guitar. Unfortunately Johan choose to end his life when only 25 years old, he is still missed to this day.

[rb069] The Cherry Blues Project – The Psychiatric Years EP Vol. 1 (2009)

September 21, 2009 · Leave a Comment

http://ia311325.us.archive.org/3/items/rb069/rb069_The_Psychiatric_Years_EP_Vol_1.jpg

The Cherry Blus Project, a two-people-project from argentina, was one of the first artists on Resting Bell. They are mainly known for more experimental music, field recordings, noise and improvisation. For their “new” release on Resting Bell they did something you wouldn’t expect.

They recorded a folk record. “The Psychiatric Years EP” is rescued material from TCBP, about 4-5 years old, compiled into two EPs. All the material is folk music. Songs with melodies and structures, mostly done with guitar and voice. The production sounds really noisy in some places. Hisses, background-noises, rough sketches of songs and ideas. A great meeting between traditional song-structures and a growning experimental background.

Keep your eyes open and watch out for part 2 of this recording.

Rebeca makes the music her heart tells her to make. She stands for hope, happiness, and harmony. She believes in standing up for what is right. and that what is right is not in question, indivisible, under God. Rebecas native language is Spanish, and she has thankfully assisted me in the work of translating the lyrics into English, to be useful to peoples whose first language is English.

[aaahh.007] Emilie Lund – Emilie Lund EP (2009)

September 13, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Emilie Lund - Emilie Lund EP

It took quite some time but here she is: Emilie Lund from Stockholm, Sweden. Emilie is a young and talented singer/songwriter who is inspired by musicians like Nick Drake and Coco Rosie. Listening to music of others is by far not her only inspiration: Studying theatre at daytime and taking long walks through the nightly streets of Stockholm is part of her musical recipe. But the most important ingredient for her music is a remote area, far away from the city, somewhere in the Swedish countryside. The woods around that area can be seen as one of her main sources of inspiration. She spent half of her life in a house, practically in the forest – where she used to live with her parents. Whenever she gets there, creative things happen. (… read more about Emilie Lund)

[12rec.058] Nic Bommarito – Harp Fragments (2009)

August 22, 2009 · 1 Comment

http://ia311040.us.archive.org/3/items/12rec.058/12rec.058.jpg

For his new LP “Harp Fragments”, Nic decided to hook up with us again. What luck! A lot changed since “Taciturn” and then again everything is the same. You have the dreamy melodies, the bitter-sweet melancholia, that specific Bommarito-feel of being lost in cinescope beauty.

While Nic Bommarito is still a loner (despite assistance from his buddy Michael Connolly on viola and harp), the sound on his new album is much more that of a band, a rock band even more. His rhythm section, slightly awkward back then, is replaced by thundering drums (listen to the first track “200 Sugar Packets” to get an idea!). Tender and fragile parts change with fuzz-soaked, shoegazing noise passages that never let miss melody and bliss. Everything is tight and dense, and although the production is not always hi-fi Nic found the perfect form for his beautiful, emotional music.

On “Better Than Way Too Post-Rock”, all that is Nic Bommarito today is summed up in 5:30 wonderful minutes. The golden ration of crestfallen Americana, North American Folklore and shoegaze Indiepop. Only for this tune, Nic uses a vocal sample, like building a bridge to “Taciturn”. And the circle closes… Thank you Nic!

[laridae049] Angela Aux – Common Space Incidents (2009)

August 1, 2009 · Leave a Comment

„Common Space Incidents“ is the official debut-album of singer and instrumentalist Angela Aux.

Songtitles and lyrics are based on several interesting things all around space and time, men and machines and the question, whether angst of error is error itself.

„Common Space Incidents“ ranges from 60ies folk to neopsych soundcollages but features experimental hiphop and electronic as well. Some loop ways end up somewhere among trash pop, spoken word and blippop – as space is the place for every kind of things.

Enjoy!

Barbagallo – Floppy Disk (2009)

July 30, 2009 · Leave a Comment

http://ia301537.us.archive.org/2/items/barbagallo-floppydisk/Barbagallo-FloppyDisk-2009-Web.jpg

About “Floppy Disk” – Written by Enrico Veronese, Translated by Francesco Cantone:

Floppy disks are our vintage, that’s a fact. Soon cds will follow too. Before this comes true, grab Carlo Barbagallo’s “Floppy Disk”, a very talented sicilian musician who is also a member of Albanopower and Suzanne’Silver. If you’re sick of the derailed application of the concept of “indie”, have a listen to his 11 tracks, to be played as if they were two sides of a vinyl. You’re going to find various analogies with both the way and the ethics stemmed from 70’s record production added to a low-fi necessity but without the blurred mind of those who deny the past and keep from knowing what has happened afterwards.

Rarely enough, “Floppy Disk” leaves an ultimate image in your mind, hitting the ground around that place psychologists call “ocean felling”, that is the unborn reactions to the outer stimulus they perceive when they are still in the womb. Psycho-Floydish attitude becomes a natural partner to the latest Beatles, as well as a conservation of the american classics (Neil Young, country, blues, west coast rock radios) added to an eye for 90’s disciples like Layne Staley, Shawn Smith and Greg Dulli; alienated impros descend smoothly from the glam era written by Brian Eno, Bowie and King Crimson.

Here is an unaware hold on to the present Dr. Dog and the already regretted Beta Band, vocal deviations à la Damno Albarn’s soundtracks and an osmotic liaison with Albanopower (another dissociated utopia, if you look at our times) whose lemon tree field has witnessed the birth of the vocal lines.

In translucency you see Barbagallo, a new figure who’s intended to populate like elves do our oneiric, narc-hypnotic, maieutic dimension of our musical reception: a cubic super8 kaleidoscope yellow blurred patina from which you cannot escape in first place, then you don’t even want to, right when butterflies begin to prevail.

[rsc017] Sanchez is driven by demons – Robot Replicas (2009)

July 26, 2009 · Leave a Comment

after some side steps (remnant and and friends), solo projects and side projects, Sanchez is driven by demons has returned with their latest and perhaps also as implied last full length album robot replicas. the band has come a long way from their first experiments on the untitled debut album in 2002 and they have finally evolved into a band with confidence enough to sing in seven out of ten songs.

robot replicas takes you on a roller-coaster ride both musically and emotionally with mostly new experiences like up-tempo blonde redhead tribute saab, coldplay pop sounding om en stund skiner solen and rhythmic experimental bipolar. familiar demon territories are however visited with the ambient cut up piano track power of radio, the even more ambient monster and static void and, ending the record, the simple and beautiful vocal and vocoder driven labradford that brings you back to the same feelings, that of the 2002 panda.

the record tells a story – a story of leaving the past and parts of oneself behind, to come to terms with one’s demons and an awakening thirst for life. the risk of being pretentious is by far overcome by the genuine and straightforward way the music and lyrics manage to channel feelings of bitterness, pain and hope. the lyrics are an essential part throughout the whole record – a sense of intimacy is conveyed by the soft and at once compelling whispering – making up a contrast to the inexorable, sometimes fierce and yet delicate music. together, the impression is very strong and it’s impossible not to be hit by the power expressed by the songs.

the record is constantly balancing between sadness and hope, but gradually building up a sense of anticipation. it is intense and very real.

buy robot replicas and receive one of the 50 numbered copies packaged in a beautifully made arigato pak.

[bim18] Model Warships – Merchant (2009)

July 26, 2009 · Leave a Comment

http://ia360636.us.archive.org/0/items/Bim18-ModelWarships-Merchant/bim18.jpgMerchant is the debut full-length of Model Warships -
the lo-fi, implosive solo songwriting project of Michael Waters.

Previously found honing his craft in groups ranging from ambient and noise to post-rock and folk, Model Warships represents the culmination of these disparate influences, blending pop structures with emotive vocals and experimental arrangements.

Beginning in late 2008 with a handful of simple guitar-driven songs, they gradually evolved and disintegrated in parallel with Waters’s own trends in self-destruction. An album of catharsis and introspection, Merchant is recorded with a stark, lo-fi sound which imbues even the more plaintive corners of the album with an undercurrent of brutality and panic.

For fans of Frog Eyes, Xiu Xiu, The Music Tapes, The Microphones/Mt Eerie, Sufjan Stevens.
