Free Albums Galore » Juanitos – three albums

I’m really not quite sure about The Juanitos. Their mixture of rock, disco, lounge, and Spanish music is odd but fun. The bottom line is that any music that makes me feel good is probably worth recommending. Their three free online albums, available Jamendo, certainly gives you a lot of music to help you feel good. This is essentially party music with no apologies and no strings attached.

Best of is not really a “best of” album as much as just their newest mix of fun sounds. The music ranges from funky to mariachi with a whole bunch of genres tripping over each other on the dance floor. I especially like the mariachi grind of “Do The Cobra” and the totally get-down-and -party “Latin Fever”. “Frankenstein in Shanghai” mixes a cheesy Chinese riff with reggae and funny vocals.

Exotica sounds a bit more balanced. The main thrust is Latin beats mixed with surf rock and lounge. Still a party album. Still a lot of fun.

It should not be a surprise to say you get pretty much the same thing from I’m Your DJ yet it is a bit different. It is the earliest of the albums and is more of a electronic dance album with some clever sampling on cuts like “Woman’s Liberation”, “El Loco Boogaloo” and “Pancho is a Bad Guy”. This is a straight forward dance affair that will appeal to many. But whatever album you choose to download, be prepared for some tongue-in-cheek amusement.

Chill with The Chola » Good Evening Space Travelers 2009 08-07-09

This month’s podcast is a continuation of my “Space Traveler” series and is once again dedicated to the folks over at Lounge Radio. I try to add an episode to this series every year and I figured it was time to slow things down, and, bring out the deeper side of downtempo for this month’s show.

I took a trip to Berlin in July and had an amazing time. I had the opportunity to visit a few clubs, lounges, and bars. It really seems that Germans love their Minimal Electronica. I was pretty surprised just how much that trip influenced my song selection this month. Almost inadvertently I found myself seeking out deeper, minimal types of music to mix along with ambient and chill out tunes. I am quite pleased with what came about from that subconscious decision. After listening to the complete episode, I am quite sure that Berlin has forever left its mark in my heart.

This month’s chillout podcast includes a wonderful selection of deeper chillout music, ambient, and what do you know… even a few minimal tunes. :) Enjoy!

“SOUNDWORKS SPOTLIGHT” ARTIST: PRETTY LIGHTS

Thanks for joining us for Episode #12! There’s lots to enjoy in this episode–chilled-out abstract hip-hop, downtempo, ambient, trip-hop, lounge, jazzy electronica, and even a little dub for you to enjoy. I even mixed the tracks a little differently this time.

The first half of the show is more upbeat, while the second half is a little darker. All in all, it’s a very chilled out mix that I’m sure you’ll enjoy. I’d like to tell you about some new developments here at the home offices of Subzero Soundworks.
