“Nyctalgia was founded somewhen in winter 2007. Band-founder Silvio is still looking for some other people to join it. The first demo called “Time changed everything” was released on 20th august 2009 and contains five songs of ambient and classical influenced Post-rock. There are no specific plans for the future, but Nyctalgia won’t stop now…”
[...] an interesting technique i used on several of these remixes: when i would open the song to start remixing, i would change ALL the instruments (keyboards became horns, basslines became percussion, etc.) BEFORE listening to the results. this type of chance method is of course a very eno thing to do. then i would listen to what was presented to me, keep some of it,change parts that didn’t work, and continue to fiddle with settings and effects until the piece was “finished”. ‘Carry Me Home’ is the 5th Loss of a Child release and is their most expansive yet, a deeply layered album with flowing and interwoven melodies; contrasting instruments supporting, offsetting, and harmonising with each other and mixed for each to be heard though not necessarily under every listening environment, and certainly not on first listen; experimental through its strict structure and detailed song writing as opposed to the freedom and improvisation of many instrumental acts. Dave Merson-Hess is a New York City-based film composer and experimental musician, and curator of the Reverse Engine netlabel. He began composing for film in 2000, as a film production major at the University of Southern California. Dave has written music for numerous short films in addition to releasing music as The Starry Tides and as a member of various other home recording projects. PRESENCE is his first feature-length score.
about the film:
“Music from the film PRESENCE” is the score for an independent/cult science fiction film which has premiered in June 2009 at the Seattle True Independent Film Festival (STIFF) in Seattle, Washington, USA. The film is heavily influenced by Jean-Luc Godard’s Alphaville, Werner Herzog’s Wild Blue Yonder, and the films of David Lynch. It was shot in downtown Los Angeles, CA, mostly at night. It uses music heavily, as well as public domain and stock footage from the U.S. National Archives in Washington, D.C. to tell its story.
“Magical music on “Eurasia” is full of apprentice’s patience, unruffled cal and Buddhist leniency towards all living beings. We hear insisde ourselves what is there and take it as it is”. Simply speaking, they are playing the air and aren’t being in a stew. The most important discipline of The Winter War In Tibet is the lightness and naturalness – the lightness and naturalness of running water. [...]
The first full-length LP from New Century Classics, Natural Process was released for free on November 23rd, 2009 by the label FDM Recordings.
The album is a collection of songs, ranging from three years to six months of age, recorded with love during March and October 2008 at FDM Studios in Lotyń, Poland.
It’s been a while, but good things come to those who wait. Hailing from opposite ends of Australia, Perth’s Tangled Thoughts of Leaving and Sydney’s sleepmakeswaves are proud to present you with a shiny new split LP. It’s a record from two bands that are very different yet one that finds an equilibrium between the seemingly disparate tendencies of the two groups. Although both bands find common ground in their latent electronic influences, sleepmakeswaves marry these ideas to their characteristic brand of energetic and uplifting instrumental rock while Tangled Thoughts of Leaving pursue a relentlessly improvisatory, innovative path. The results are more foreboding yet no less spectacular, and are all the more reason to watch for their debut full lengths, slated for 2010.
Dextro is Scottish born Ewan Mackenzie. Neatly balanced ambient, with shoegaze, folk and post-rock influences, upon first listening it’s easy to begin comparisons with fellow Scottish IDM legends Boards of Canada. But, as The Milk Factory quoted back in 2006 when describing ‘Consequence Music’, that wouldn’t be fair: [...]

To celebrate our first 27 releases on Section 27 Netlabel, we proudly present to you “Sectioned”, a compilation of 27 tracks, amounting to 2 hours across two discs of twisted electronic beats, discordant melodies, haunting passages, broken ambience, bending senses of time and space, microscopic glitches, pounding bass frequencies, sounds between sounds, the human voice and the audible sensation of music dissolving in acid. This is the sound of your mind’s eye. This is the sound of the Sectioned… Strap yourself in and enjoy the experience.
Also features a 75 minute bonus disc “Sectioned : Nonimxs”, including 9 remixes of selected Section 27 artists by Nonima and 2 original tracks created by Silent Snow and Nina Kardec using existing Nonima tracks.
Reviewer:Floating Spirits – – November 9, 2009 Subject: One of The Best!
I have to say, if you haven’t downloaded anything from SECTION 27 download this now. This has got to be one of the best compliations off of all the netlabels there are. Spanning over clicks n pops, streaming ambient synth rythmns, creepy percs, and right moment pounding kick & bass lines. What more could you ask for? A free download just cause. Well they took care of that too. So what have you got to lose but some hard drive space!
5/5***** for my boys from SECTION 27
thanx & keep those artists coming!
This Is My Normal State is a post-rock/ambient band from Bristol, South West England. Formed in October 2008, the band has just finished recording its debut EP: Angel Falls ++ (October 2009).
Taking influences from bands such as Sigur RÃ’s, Explosions in the Sky, This Will Destroy You, Mono, Mogwai and Joy Wants Eternity to name a few, the band create a sound-scape of interlocking melodies, typified by the use of reverb drenched guitar loops, and fragile, ethereal vocals.
Original sound design, widely varying instrumentation, broad thematic scope, and a dark, profound vision are the hallmarks of Palancar’s classic 2003 release, “Momerath”. Originally released commercially on Blue Water Records, this album is now re-released and available freely under Creative Commons via Earth Mantra. [...]
“Roof To Roof EP” is my second EP.
I think that this EP should be categorized following genres…
Chill-Out, Pop, Electro, Post-Rock, Indietronica, Down-Tempo, Acoustic,
And so on.
The Pencil-Case – producing a blend between electronica, breakbeat, ambient, abstract-hip-hop, with a post-rock sensibility – is the second French artist to Bump Foot. “Euclidian Fractales” has introspective atmosphere and effective usage of voices with carefully prepared sounds, high quality in full quantity.
For his new LP “Harp Fragments”, Nic decided to hook up with us again. What luck! A lot changed since “Taciturn” and then again everything is the same. You have the dreamy melodies, the bitter-sweet melancholia, that specific Bommarito-feel of being lost in cinescope beauty.
While Nic Bommarito is still a loner (despite assistance from his buddy Michael Connolly on viola and harp), the sound on his new album is much more that of a band, a rock band even more. His rhythm section, slightly awkward back then, is replaced by thundering drums (listen to the first track “200 Sugar Packets” to get an idea!). Tender and fragile parts change with fuzz-soaked, shoegazing noise passages that never let miss melody and bliss. Everything is tight and dense, and although the production is not always hi-fi Nic found the perfect form for his beautiful, emotional music.
On “Better Than Way Too Post-Rock”, all that is Nic Bommarito today is summed up in 5:30 wonderful minutes. The golden ration of crestfallen Americana, North American Folklore and shoegaze Indiepop. Only for this tune, Nic uses a vocal sample, like building a bridge to “Taciturn”. And the circle closes… Thank you Nic!
Volume 13 marks the beginning of the fourth year of The Silent Ballet’s compilation series. Three years ago the first volume was sent out to the world via the Internet, and today we’re still dedicated to bringing our readers exciting, innovative compilations filled with the best and brightest artists from around the globe.
We’ve come a long way since Poetry Without Words, but hopefully the series has shown that the website is unrestrained by genre and is willing to travel to any corner of the world to unearth up-and-coming musicians. Volume 13 feels particularly international, featuring artists from four continents and nine countries, yet also demonstrates that there is something that connects all of us nonetheless.
We’re committed to our goal of providing quality music in a respectable format without charge. As one of life’s greatest pleasures, music should be freely available to all and resistent to commodification. A big thanks goes out to all the artists and labels who made this project possible. Relevant links can be found below; any support is greatly appreciated.
Release: July 2009 Genre: Wave, Indie, Post Rock, Ambient
The eighth part of the series brings you a varied mix of catchy (but also deep and emotional) songs and atmospheric instrumental tracks.
‘Spirits of Summer’ is a soundtrack for sunny days, starlit nights and the life itself.
So, If you like new wave, folk, post rock, indie pop, piano, ambient, shoegaze or simply good music you should definitely check this out!
PS: Almost all of the ten bands and artists on the sampler offer their full albums as free downloads!
Maths is the study of quantity, structure, space, change, and related topics of pattern and form.
Rock is a naturally occurring solid aggregate of minerals and/or mineraloids.
‘Schematics’ is the debut EP from five piece Helsingfors, including all four ex-From The Sky members, and is an instrumental post-math-rock hybrid, a logical progression from their previous work. Upping the complexity and melodic layering mixed with upbeat, jarring indie-rock, ‘Schematics’ was recorded primarily as a live band and bursts with the live energy this brings.
A physical CD release is also available from here and is being promoted and distributed by the new indie record label from The 405 website, 405 Records.
The record was written towards the end of 2008, and recorded over the winter of 2009. It’s something of a summer pop record. Or about as close as we’ll ever get to writing a summer pop record anyway. We hope you like it.
‘Sparks and Beams’ is a beautifully crafted and studied record, full of interweaving guitar and bass lines and intelligent flowing drums, creating a gloriously chiming and melodic post/math-rock EP.
Oakland, CA might have a rep for grim crime statistics and intimidating sidewalks, but the city just a bridge toll away from S.F. also holds some very pretty aspects, and ambient IDM imprint n5md is one of the best.
We’ve experienced a bit of a lag time between compilations 9 and 12, as our tri-monthly series has stalled out over the past half of a year. To remedy this situation, volumes 10 through 12 will be released in close proximity to one another. That’s right, three great compilations for the price of, well, nothing!
No sacrifice in quality has been made to make this possible. We continue to pull from the best and brightest artists we know to offer something fresh and provocative. Listeners will notice a contrast of styles between the three volumes; as always, we attempt to introduce something new in every volume. We believe readers of The Silent Ballet will find plenty to celebrate over the four hours of music.
A big thanks goes out to all the artists and labels who made this project possible. Relevant links can be found below where your support for their music can be demonstrated.

From The Sky’s second release, mini-album ‘Like Crystal in a World of Glass’, was originally released in 2006 by Sound Devastation records and was well received for the young band. We now re-release ‘Like Crystal…’ on Lost Children in memory of the now defunct band as an accompaniment for their third release, EP ‘A Warm Place With No Memory’, which is also on Lost Children. For those wishing to purchase a CD version of ‘Like Crystal…’, there are still copies available from Sound Devastation here.
A more upbeat and energetic instrumental rock release than many post-rock releases in 2006, it laid the groundwork for From The Sky’s manic and often chaotic shows which commonly ended with the live favourite ‘Someone To Remember’ and very little of the stage left.
This version of ‘Like Crystal…’ also contains the previously unreleased version of ‘Needle Happy Paediatricians’ as a bonus track
New single.
Sparkle Afternoon is an Indonesian pop minimalist band (according to the band’s own definition) with indiepop, post-rock, shoegaze and britpop elements.
The name is derived from the bright-bright afternoon in 19th December 2007.
The band consists of
Ratih Kemala Dewi (vocals), Diki Setiadi (guitar), Wama Kurnia (bass), Yogie (guitar), Riska Rachmawati (keyboards) and Tedy Wijaya (drums). Original keyboardist Dina left in May 2007.
The band is based in Bandung, Indonesia.
iambic aka Guy Andrews is back with his first release of 2009 entitled “Echos”. The EP captures a much more live sound than iambic’s previous works, fusing electronic and traditional instruments together to build rich electro-acoustic textures and melodies. This EP lies somewhere between nu-jazz, post-rock and iambic’s own aurally evocative ambient style and has already received excellent feedback when performed by Guy and his live band.
We blogged about Pablo Dicciea while ago, citing their boyish charms and love for post-rock. Somehow they found out about this and gifted us with this podcast. Excellent. They play some of their influences and some of their own tunes, which are far better than their influences I reckon! Check them out like. Jolly good.
