For the last year or so, “El Centro Cultural de España en México”, Spain’s Cultural Center, at the heart of downtown Mexico City, has become one of the city’s leading spots for contemporary Art and Music.

Showcasing the constant output of the many cultural and artistic collectives that have sprout of late all over the country, it has become the epicenter of the thriving experimental electronic music scene in Mexico. To celebrate its fifth anniversary, it has issued an eleven-track compilation of forward-looking Mexican electronic music, from artists’ collectives and labels such as Spectre, Soundsister, Discos Invisibles, Static, Filtro, Abolipop and, of course, Konfort.

The music ranges from the dark soundscapes of Denizen to the minimal techno of Cezna and Zofa. Different artists make for different takes on electronic experimentation: Lao adds a slice of dub, Abduct draws a soothing musical landscape with a sparse palette of synthetic sounds, Jack’s Son turns a two-step tune into a sonic sculpture of disembodied vocals and rhythm, and MHV hands the spotlight back to the melody.

The final result is a heterogeneous family portrait of the current crop of sonic experimentalists in this land.

Artur, who stays behind ROZA project, hails from Kharkiv, Ukraine, but nowadays he lives in Poland. All his music sounds, according to him, in a russian-kosmicshamanhypnocontactee style. Hell of a description, but it suits ROZA’s tracks very well.

What we really like about the album is that it’s almost impossible to characterize it in a matter of specific musical genre or style. This is the music which can be depicted in such terms as “good” or “attractive”, or “visionary” or “surreal” but not “rock”, “hip-hop”, “glitch”, “negerpunk” or whatever is usually on your iPod/Winamp.

The album starts with a deep, vibrant sound which reminds me the final dark electronic period of Coil magiciansmusicians. But soon the music turns into some sort of Tribal-Folk with a heartbreaking chorals, freakish oriental drum patterns, and blurred sitar/string melodies which flows in an endless ocean of acoustical noises. The more you listen to this epic ballade-intro, the more you realize that “GLitch ov Batumi” will settle down in your mp3-player for a long time. On the “Irenashvili djan” song you’ll have to deal with catchy overdriven acid flavored oriental broken beats a-la Muslimgauze. And on the “Mountings” you’ll be drowned in a deepest lake of abstract ambient. And the comprehensive title of “Drummers ov God” song needs no additional comments, I believe.

“GLitch ov Batumi” is definitely one of the best albums we received this year and we’re really happy and proud to share this music with you – we really hope it’s not the latest piece from the wonderful ROZA project. And he already promised to send us more stuff. Let the beat contact your body…

Experimental but grooving stuff inside! Samonoka is the last side project of Akan and OmasFGT.

This clever partnership was so obvious that it should had come sooner. Funkiness flavored and fine beat/bass programming skills of Akan metling with big sceneries OmasFGT could only give a nice result.

Sivajih is maybe the better example of this successful assembly. Loud groove embellished with many fx sounds.

After the successfull Netlabel start of Anneke with the release “The Hip Back” on auflegware (alw016), here is the second step of the Berlin based talent.

This Release plays the typical duby emotional sound of the artist. The opening track “Simms dub” is a very experimentel track with unplugged instruments, for example bass-guitar and saxophon. Smulgh and Plow are slowly dubtech tunes, it creates an deep emotional atmospheric sprit.

But not enough, there are massive remix support from Thomas Marlow (Enliven). He gives us his typical bongolized touch of the track “Plouw”. The other remix comes from Jano Brook with a pumping club version of Simms Dub.

This album is a retrospective of Nikouala’s music, recorded between 2004-07 at Porto (Nikouala Mobile Studios) and Barcelos (Oops! studio) - Portugal.

Nikouala’s work was first released in two separated volumes, by honeysound in 2005 and 2007; “Vol.1″ is the soundtrack created by Nikouala for the theatre plays “Le Petit Monstre”, written by Jasmine Dubé (Canada) and “Mestre Gepeto” by António Torrado (Portugal); “Vol.2″ is the result of several experiences for live performances at Museu de Olaria de Barcelos and Casa da Juventude de Esposende (Portugal) and at the Certame Audiovisual Internacional de Vilagarcía de Arousa (Spain), based on Buster Keaton’s silent movie “The General”. “Gepetto’s death” was used in the short feature “Não Contes o Segredo” at the Fast Forward Film Festival (Braga-Portugal) and “Aggiornamento” was used in the “RGB Concept” trailer, first presented at the Faculdade de Engenharia do Porto (Porto-Portugal).

Nikouala performed live for Portuguese national television RTP2 versions of “Operation : You think you can change the world and then…” and “2.0.0.7.”. The album is available for full free download at Bump Foot (Japanese Edition).

Back with his promise; Twin Tower Connection is back to give us more abstract funk and as always he does it in fine fashion. Homegrown is more versitile than previous releases by T.T.C. The first three tracks are funky tech-house bombs that have heavy rolling basslines layered with dark shuffling melodies. The forth track “Kopfsache,” is very experemental and is more influenced by breakbeat but fused very well with a nice minimal techno vibe. To bring things home, T.T.C. drops a nice head boppin’ trip-hop track at the end. featuring some nice slick melodies with a smooth bassline to boot. Another experemental EP done in only a way Twin Tower can do it. Enjoy.
