For the last year or so, “El Centro Cultural de España en México”, Spain’s Cultural Center, at the heart of downtown Mexico City, has become one of the city’s leading spots for contemporary Art and Music.

Showcasing the constant output of the many cultural and artistic collectives that have sprout of late all over the country, it has become the epicenter of the thriving experimental electronic music scene in Mexico. To celebrate its fifth anniversary, it has issued an eleven-track compilation of forward-looking Mexican electronic music, from artists’ collectives and labels such as Spectre, Soundsister, Discos Invisibles, Static, Filtro, Abolipop and, of course, Konfort.

The music ranges from the dark soundscapes of Denizen to the minimal techno of Cezna and Zofa. Different artists make for different takes on electronic experimentation: Lao adds a slice of dub, Abduct draws a soothing musical landscape with a sparse palette of synthetic sounds, Jack’s Son turns a two-step tune into a sonic sculpture of disembodied vocals and rhythm, and MHV hands the spotlight back to the melody.

The final result is a heterogeneous family portrait of the current crop of sonic experimentalists in this land.

Contagion Vol. 1 is the second release from Dead Tree Productions, a dark psychedelic trance label rooted in the Brazilian underground. Rebelling against the pervasive manipulations of mass media and pop culture, Contagion is an unlikely antidote for alienation and disillusionment. Through the use of twisted leads, brutal beats, and bleak atmospheric programming, this compilation explores the far reaches of the psytrance spectrum with some tracks approaching 160 BPM. Contagion Volume 1 was mastered by Bash, compiled and designed by Clóves Cardoso, and features the photography of Jeff S. Love.

We are proud to announce the release of long-awaited consecutive part of the leading Qunabu dub-label compilation - “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Dub Band 2″. This time it’s a set of 12 tracks made by artists from all over the world, namely from Canada, Turkey, Argentina, France, Portugal, Croatia, Germany, Italy and Poland. Expressly for this occasion premiere pieces were made by artists like Das Kraftfuttermischwerk, Segue, Peak or Echo_TM.

Assorted dub artists have created tracks especially for the occasion, perfectly conveying the big idea behind the label: to present dub music in the broadest understanding of the term. Like the previous edition, this record aims to show the whole spectrum of minimal-dub-techno phenomenon, inspired by sounds from Berlin and Detroit. This one is a must for all lovers of smoky, technical, post-jamaican vibes.

One of the best ways to get a grasp on the variety of music that is available through netlabels is to browse the several compilation series that has been put together by music fans and bloggers. I have already reviewed a few of them including Netbloc and The Silent Ballet. A new kid on the block is the Netmuzyka.com, a humble blog presenting Niesencje, a creative series of online albums bringing what they consider the cream of the netlabel crop. Their focus is somewhat mainstream, meaning no avant-garde, but there is a wide assortment of electronic music, IDM, nu-jazz, dance, introverted folk/pop, and ambient . There are currently seven collections, all having a consistently high quality with all tracks well chosen and each separate album having a listening duration of 40 to 60 minutes. Quite a few of the artists have already been discovered and written about by yours truly including Umma Project, ST, Post Human Era, and Stockfinster. However I am also unearthing a number of other promising artists which I have made a note to check out more thoroughly. These include the new age Virculum, an urban-percussive Skarv, and a exotically Latin Trafficjam. There’s just too many interesting tracks on these albums. Suffice to say, I’m currently listening to Vim’s fairytale of a tune titled “That Smell of Spring Rain” while it is 114 degrees Fahrenheit outside and digging it. All in all, this is a very fine series, nothing too challenging yet all enjoyable and worth checking out.

For the second time (two years old !), Dolebrai Webradio released a compilation of netlabel tracks. This is a set of 16 eclectic titles. The main genre is electronic with some rock, jazz and hip-hop stuff included. The last songs are more dancefloor oriented to make it funkier !
It is not a “best of” tracks playlisted last year, but a selection of tracks/artists which marked our past year. We hope you will enjoy these tunes !
